The “Effie M.” and “ALMA” Relief Fund.

Sir:-

            The Committee appointed by His Excellency in Council and administer the fund subscribes for the relief of the sufferers by the loss of the schooners “Effie M.” of Trinity, and “Alma,” of Scilly Cove, Trinity Bay, in September, 1907, beg to report:-

            That the total amount subscribed for the fund to January 21st, 1908, is $4,442.20, of which sum $2,986 or thereabouts are available for the sufferers by the loss of the “Effie M.,” and $1,455 or thereabouts for the sufferers by the loss of the “Alma.”

            Your Committee have produced exact statistical information as to the number of widows and orphans left by those who perished.  They find in the case of the “Effie M.” that there are needing assistance: Five Widows; Fourteen Orphans and other children under 14 years of age; Three aged helpless relatives of the men lost.  In case of the “Alma” they find that there are: Four Widows: Six Orphan children under 14 years of age; Two aged relatives.

            Your Committee have drawn up a scheme providing first for the children until they shall respectively reach the age of 14 years.  Next for the widows, providing for them an allowance for varying terms from two to five years according to their needs.  The other sufferers are also included in the scheme as their circumstances seem to require. 

            Copies of the scheme of awards, and the balance sheet of the account are attached to this report.  From these it will be seen that the total amount awarded under the scheme is $4,440.77, leaving a balance for postage, stationary, etc. of $1.63.
