The Trinity Disaster

A sad scene was witnessed at the Parish Hall, Trinity West, when the ten additional bodies arrived by the steamship Ethie and were taken there to be recognized.  The bodies were recognized in the presence of the Magistrate.  Thirteen bodies of the fifteen then known to be on board have been recovered.  The bodies of John Pinhorn and James Janes are still missing.  Both the magistrate and the clergyman, Mr. Hollands, say that a special fund will be needed.  We have already communicated with them and informed them that nearly $1200 have been collected by their members.  In a letter received this morning from the Reverend C. Hollands, the incumbent, we learn that one of the cases is especially distressful.  One woman lost a husband, two sons, a brother and a nephew and a cousin, and is now left with six sons and a crippled daughter, the eldest of whom is ten years old.

When Mr. Hollands was there, they were absolutely destitute and had not a bite in the house.  The rev. gentleman relieved their destitution at once, and he also obtained temporary relief from Mr. Lilly, the Magistrate.  This morning we represented the case to the Premier and he promised immediate assistance from the government.
