The S.S. Ethie

On December 11, 1919, the steam and sail driven coastal boat, S. S. Ethie was driven aground just south of Western Brook Pond on the Great Northern Peninsula. A Newfoundland dog was sent out through the raging surf with a line and miraculously, all 92 passengers were saved, including a baby hauled ashore in a mailbag. Gradually eroded over the years, all that remains today is a section of the bow and one of the boilers.
